lezing Oude Testament: Genesis 32: 2 - 33
Hoe wordt een mens mens naar Gods bedoeling, een mens in de bijbelse zin van het woord ? Een ware Jacob of Jacobien, zou je kunnen zeggen ? Of eigenlijk, juist niet. Maar daarover zo dadelijk. Er zijn veel mensen die denken dat mens worden min of meer vanzelf gaat. Het is gewoon een zaak van goed en gezond leven, van een goede opvoeding, van orde en regelmaat in je bestaan, van je houden aan de regels van fatsoen en respect voor een ander.

Dorst naar God. Daarover gaat het vanmorgen. Dorst naar God. De bijbel is een vat vol beelden. Als je die beelden alleen maar letterlijk neemt, krijg je fundamentalisme. Dan gaat het fout. Daarvoor zijn beelden niet bedoeld. Een beeld is iets dat verwijst naar iets anders.

Because we have our English language service only once a month, we are today observing Pentecost a week early, while still officially in the season of Easter. But mindful of that, I have chosen a story as the basis of my sermon which, although it is assuredly a message for Pentecost, none the less looks back to Easter: Will D. Campbell's story of the Easter chicken, from his autobiography Brother to a Dragonfly.
Now, the Rev. Will Campbell is not exactly a household name, even in the United States, and certainly not here, so he probably needs a few words of introduction. He is a Southern Baptist minister, eighty-six years old this year.

Bezet gebied, daarover gaat het vanmorgen. En er is in de wereld, die van vroeger en nu, wat sprake van bezet gebied ! Je hoeft alleen maar te denken aan veel Europese landen in de perio¬de 1939 - 1945 of aan het vroegere Joegoslavië, nog maar kort geleden, of aan Irak en aan Afghanistan, nu.

God zoekt mens. Daarover gaat het vanmorgen. God zoekt mens. Het televisieprogramma “Boer zoekt vrouw” haalde, heb ik begrepen, meerdere malen kijkcijfers van een ongekende hoogte. Miljoenen Nederlanders keken de afgelopen vier jaar naar dit agrarisch dating-programma.

I'm sure that in the swirl of thoughts which went through the minds of the disciples between Thursday night and Sunday morning – and probably even after that – one of the most prominent was the eternal human cry, 'What went wrong?' Things had been going so well: the crowds had welcomed Jesus as the Messiah four days before when he entered Jerusalem, announcing his identity by his choice of a donkey mount – I know, you've probably heard preachers bang on about how Jesus' choice of a donkey was a contrast to Messianic expectations – after all, Jesus wasn't literally the man on the white horse, and all that – but these preachers don't know their scripture as well as the crowds did: Zechariah 9:9 says the Messiah will ride in on a donkey, so Jesus was being about as blatant about who he was as it is possible to be.

Or rather, there are usually two boys at the centre of the group, who are supposed to do the fighting, but who are most reluctant, really wanting to avoid it because they know that one or the both of them are going to get hurt in this thing, surrounded by a group of their friends who want to see them fight, and are doing their best to provoke it...

I don't know if there is a specific term for it, like numismatics for coin collecting, or philately for stamp collecting, or deltiology for collecting postcards, but whether there is a name for it or not one can make a fascinating study of collecting and analysing the last words of famous people.

Nog even en dan is de avond van de laatste dag van de eerste tien jaar van het derde millennium voorbij. “Want duizend jaren zijn in uw ogen als de dag van gisteren, wanneer hij is voorbijgegaan is”, zegt de dichter van psalm 90. Duizend jaar als 1 dag. Dat geldt voor God. Maar voor ons, mensen, met een blik die altijd maar een klein deel van de dingen in een keer kan vatten, geldt iets anders. Tien jaar, dat is niet 1 dag. Dat is tien keer 365 dagen. Dat is 85.440 uren.
25 december 2009 - Kerstfeest
“Zoals de engelen zongen ……..”. Dat staat er op de voorkant van de liturgie van vanmorgen. Zoals de engelen zongen ……… En al of niet goed kerkelijk of christelijk opgevoed als je bent, vul je dan als vanzelf in. Iets van “gloria in excelsis Deo” of “d`eer van de nieuw geboren Heer”. Dat soort dingen. Want je hebt zo`n Kerstviering al vele malen meegemaakt, meer of minder bewust, en je weet dus zo langzamerhand heus wel waar Kerst over gaat. Hetzelfde geldt misschien ook wel voor het Kerstverhaal zelf.

Despite its political title, today's sermon really begins as a reflection in this month of remembrance in the English-speaking world – a month which begins with All Saints day, includes Remembrance Day in Great Britain and Thanksgiving in the United States. The title of the sermon is in quotation marks because it is in fact a quote: it is the title of a sermon – a scandalous sermon, which cost the preacher his pulpit – which was preached 90 years ago, at the Reformed Dutch Church at Green Point, in Brooklyn, New York.

Psalm 103, which we used as our responsive reading this morning, is quite a familiar one for me. It is one of the standard passages read during the funeral liturgy in the Reformed Church in America, and as pastor of an urban parish with a large percentage of elderly members (and ex-members, whose families called when they passed away), it was a Psalm that I found myself reading quite often. In the setting of the funeral liturgy it pretty obviously has to do with a judgement of some sort, on the one hand an assertion that we can expect mercy when we appear for judgement at the end of our lives

At my age, and with as many years as I have been in the ministry, it is not often that I can read a Bible story, particularly a Bible story as familiar as that of the first Pentecost, and find something new in it. But that is just what happened last month, which is why you are getting a slightly belated Pentecost sermon.

Waartoe ben ik op aarde ? Daarover gaat het vanmorgen. Waartoe ben ik op aarde ? Met die vraag begon vroeger de catechismus van de rooms-katholieke kerk. En in protestantse kring kende men in het eerste deel van de Heidelberger Catechismus – die ik helemaal uit mijn hoofd diende te leren - iets dergelijks. Het antwoord op de vraag luidde: “Wij zijn op aarde om God te dienen en daardoor hier en in het hiernamaals gelukkig te zijn”.

Taal. Of liever talén. Daarover gaat het vanmorgen. Daarnet hebben we er een gehoord. Nederlands. Eén van de, ik weet het niet precies, zo`n 7000 levende talen op aarde. Eentje. Dat mensen überhaupt elkaar kunnen verstaan, zeker over de taalgrenzen heen, dat is eigenlijk een wonder.

What is the sense in praying? You heard that right: I did not ask, what is a sense of prayer? I asked, what is the sense of praying?
On a philosophical or theological level, there wouldn't seem to be any sense in praying. Our most basic assertions about God are that God is omniscient (all-knowing), and all-merciful, or all-good. If those assertions are true, then there is no need to pray: God knows what we need – what we really need, not necessarily what we think we need, although He presumably knows that too – and we don't need to pray to remind Him.

Ook hier in de Pauluskerk onder onze bezoekers, ondanks alles, en ook vaak humor. Maar ook hier om de hoek, op de Westkruiskade of hierachter in het park, als ik daar loop tussen de mensen, oud en vooral jong.

Het is een vraag, die je je onwillekeurig stelt, denk ik, als je de beelden van het afgelopen jaar de revue laat passeren. Een jaar, dat in ons eigen land bijvoorbeeld werd getekend door de film Fitna, door Trots op Nederland – of eigenlijk niet dus – en door het rookverbod.
